Our Story

More than a sports drink

Refresh was born out of need, on a day of defeat and victory.

Jeff Bandura, ex-NHL hockey player and avid cyclist challenged himself to a charity cancer ride from Kelowna to Vancouver, 390 km of mountainous highway, on a 34 degree Celsius day. Fatigue, dehydration and cramping quickly became issues for the cyclists.

Although thirty riders started the race that day, only eight finished. Six of the eight refused the sponsor’s energy drink. Instead, they drank Refresh. The legend was born. For years, fellow athletes asked Jeff to mix them up some of his winning formula.

Refresh was founded in 2004 by Jeff and Richard Berg, who were passionate about sports nutrition. They wanted a sports drink that was highly effective without huge levels of sodium. It took three years of testing various formulas until they hit gold with a product that delivers results and tastes great.

Since then, flavours have been added and packaging has changed. But the original formula has stayed the same, until now. With a break-through reformulation, Refresh is the first of its kind to add shelf stable pro-biotics.

This unique recovery drink maintains fluid, energy and electrolyte balance, supports the immune system, is low in sodium, and is delicious. Refresh is free of gluten, nuts, dairy and artificial colours and flavours.

When it comes to electrolyte replacement and general sports nutrition, a better product means better performance. For weekend warriors, high performance athletes, junior players and everyone in-between, Refresh is the ultimate sports drink, for the ultimate you.

Sports Nutrition

Refresh contains

The optimal carbohydrate ratio – 6% Carbohydrates is the optimal ratio to balance energy production with fluid replacement during exercise. This balance offers both fast-acting and slow-release carbohydrates to ensure you have the energy you need when you need it.

Dextrose – a fast-acting carbohydrate that delivers minerals to the working muscles.
Maltodextrin and Fructose – slow-release carbohydrates. Since they enter the blood stream at a much lower rate than Dextrose, they provide sustained energy production and stable blood sugar levels.

Citric Acid (Citrates) – part of the Krebs Cycle (common energy pathway). Citrates provide the ability to produce more energy, to delay the onset of fatigue and reduce lactic acid build-up.

Potassium Chloride & Sodium Citrate – The mineral Potassium works with Chloride and Sodium to maintain the body’s proper fluid balance.

Magnesium Citrate – Magnesium is essential for converting blood sugar into energy. It helps prevent cramping. The compound also affects nerve and muscle function so is important for maintaining normal blood pressure and a healthy heart. Athletes have a high demand for Magnesium.

Probiotics – Probiotics support and restore the immune system. This allows the maintenance of a healthy gastrointestinal tract. A healthy gut allows fast recovery from fatigue, which helps with athletic performance.

Low Sodium – Compared to other electrolyte-replenishing drinks, Refresh is low in Sodium. Too much Sodium might overwhelm the body’s ability to regulate it. Refresh is formulated with Magnesium Citrate, a more expensive and more effective replenishing compound.
